  • The Frustration of Combo Timing(0'001'31)
The player attempts to execute a simple combo requested by the game: a light kick, then a light punch, then a heavy punch. Despite several attempts, the game refuses to validate the combo.
The player, accustomed to adventure games, expects the combo to be simply XXY, but the game demands phenomenally strict timing precision that one can attempt 30 times without ever achieving.
    • The timing between each hit is so strict that mashing buttons quickly isn't enough • There are two different timings to learn: one between the first and second hit, another between the second and third • The margin for error is so small that even when trying to compensate, the combo fails
The player gradually understands that what he thought was easy demands inhuman precision and begins to wonder if he'll ever succeed.
  • From Training to Combat Practice(1'312'07)
    • I'll never do it again • I'm supposed to land this on an enemy who's moving and will punch me the moment I get close
The only way you'll land it in combat is if your hands do it instead of your brain. If it really becomes automatic and you don't even need to think about it.
If you land the first hit on the enemy and think you have an opening, it's too late for a combo. This requires hours in training mode to become automatic.
Faced with the amount of work required, the average player puts down the controller and does something else, temporarily abandoning the idea of mastering combos.
  • Pro Demonstration at the Tournament(2'073'01)
One weekend, a Street Fighter tournament comes to town. Out of curiosity, the player goes and discovers 50 guys in plastic chairs with a commentator.
Suddenly a guy fresh off the plane from Japan shows up and starts playing.
    • He maintains the rhythm of the combo that took the average player 10 hours to execute on three hits • He executes it not on 3, 5, 7, or 10 hits, but continuously and with total control
This demonstration reveals the enormous gap between a casual player and a professional, showing that combos become second nature for true experts.
