American hackers visited Germany in 2007 and decided to reproduce hackerspaces in the United States upon their return.

FabLabs are creation spaces available in France, equipped with 3D printers and other machines available for free use by the public.

Hackerspaces and FabLabs share very similar purposes and functions as creation and innovation spaces.

Hackerspaces often have a stronger anarchist dimension compared to FabLabs.
