Since 1990, every 10 years, the statistical service of the Ministry for the Environment assesses the status and evolution of a sample of emblematic wetland sites across mainland France and overseas territories through examination of ten thematic areas (human activities and their pressures, extent and condition of wetlands on site, status of common and high-value species, hydrology and hydraulic issues, invasive and native flora and fauna problems, climate change impacts, services to society). The latest assessment covers the 2010-2020 period.

  • Key indicators from the assessment
    • As part of national action plans for wetland conservation, the statistical service of the Ministry for the Environment has conducted a ten-year assessment since 1990 of a panel of emblematic wetland sites across mainland France and overseas territories. These sites were selected for their faunal, floral, cultural and heritage value. Some may have specific protection or management designations (national park, nature reserve, Natura 2000, Ramsar label, etc.). • The 2010-2020 assessment, jointly led by the Data and Statistical Studies Service and the French Office for Biodiversity, covered 189 sites (161 in mainland France and 28 overseas) belonging to six major types, representative of the diversity of French wetland ecosystems and their resilience to various threats: alluvial valleys, Atlantic coast, English Channel and North Sea, Mediterranean coast, overseas territories, inland plains and peatland massifs.
Analysis of 422 questionnaires returned by focal points covered 85% of 223 sites initially planned. Through ten thematic areas (human activities and their pressures, extent and condition of wetlands on site, status of common and high-value species, hydrology and hydraulic issues, invasive and native flora and fauna problems, climate change impacts, services to society), this assessment characterizes pressures on these threatened spaces, provides an overview of emblematic wetland conditions and highlights challenges for their preservation.
    • Analysis of questionnaire responses enables development of indicator sets for status and trends, available in this space for open access and download. A 'Territory Profile' space informs users of a selected site's situation relative to other sites of the same type. • Data visualization of main results and analyses from the national assessment of France's emblematic wetland sites – 2010-2020 campaign (Click the image to access the digital application) Illustration 2405 Enlarge and view this illustration full size (same window) Illustration 2405
