- AnalysisBetween-country heterogeneityThe large heterogeneity between countries is linked, notably, to their population density. Soil sealing thus exceeds 9% in Benelux countries, but falls below 2% in Bulgaria, Latvia, Sweden and Finland.Comparison with major European countriesExcept for Spain (at 3.4%), the most populous European countries have a soil sealing rate higher than that of France: Germany is at 7.4%, Italy at 6.9%, the United Kingdom at 6.5%. However, relative to population size, the artificialised area is higher in France with 456 square metres per inhabitant compared to 323 square metres per inhabitant in Germany, 246 square metres per inhabitant in Great Britain, and 343 square metres per inhabitant in Italy.
