Every year, the statistical service of the General Commissariat for Sustainable Development publishes studies to better understand how French people relate to the environment. Two complementary barometers allow observation of underlying trends and recent developments: one focuses on concrete practices (daily habits, equipment, consumption), the other on opinions (perceptions of climate change, eco-anxiety, support for public policies, etc.). These surveys track behavior change and identify barriers or opportunities for action.

  • French Environmental Practices
Recycling, heating, food, transportation, and more: an annual survey analyzes daily environmental practices.
Results show gradual shifts in behavior and strong awareness of the most effective actions.
  • French Opinion on Environment
Since 2023, the BEE (Barometer for Ecology and Environment), produced with Sciences Po, tracks the evolution of French public opinion on major environmental issues annually.
In 2025, the environmental problems causing the most concern are global warming, natural disasters, and water pollution. The disappearance of certain plant or animal species is cited by only 10% of French people, despite scientific warnings on this subject (Source: SDES, Environmental Report 2025).
According to a study by the Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority, more than two in three French people view pesticides and flooding as a high or very high risk to the population. Concerns about flooding, heatwaves, and wildfires have risen significantly in recent years. However, fears about nuclear plants and radioactive waste have declined compared to 2018 (Source: SDES, Environmental Report 2025).
