As a preventive approach to environmental problems, ecodesign is a product-centered approach that can be applied in all sectors of the economy. It is currently being implemented to varying degrees and with a wide variety of tools in many sectors such as electronics, automobiles, aeronautics, equipment products, and most consumer goods.

  • Definition and principles of ecodesign
Ecodesign consists of integrating environmental protection from the design stage of goods or services. Its objective is to reduce the environmental impacts of products throughout their life cycle: extraction of raw materials, production, distribution, use, and end of life.
It is characterized by a comprehensive view of these environmental impacts: it is a multi-stage approach (taking into account the various stages of the life cycle) and a multi-criteria approach (taking into account material and energy consumption, discharges into natural environments, effects on climate and biodiversity).
Ecodesign is implemented by a company or public organization, but it involves a large number of stakeholders throughout the product's value chain and beyond, including consumers or users and extending to recovery and recycling operators. Its value lies in examining the relationships between design choices for a product and the flows of material and energy that result throughout its life cycle.
  • What are the benefits of ecodesign?
Ecodesign brings environmental gains that can concern the preservation of resources and biodiversity, the prevention of pollution and nuisances, climate balance, and soil quality. Following an ecodesign approach for a product, it is common to observe reductions in environmental impacts of between 10% and 40% for several indicators (out of approximately a dozen indicators generally calculated in life cycle assessment).
Ecodesign brings a new perspective on products, regardless of the industry and sector involved. Feedback is consistent: it provides original insights, "things we didn't expect." The aspects discovered are not only environmental, but also concern product quality, its function, the materials and technologies used.
