Environmental education and sustainable development (EEDD) is an essential lever for disseminating knowledge, driving behavioral change and empowering everyone to be an agent of daily transformation and implementation of sustainable development objectives. Access to information and knowledge on sustainable development topics contributes to better understanding of ecological and inclusive transition challenges. New forms of information dissemination, digital and audiovisual, help enrich this knowledge, carried by a multitude of actors to diverse audiences. The report on the state of the environment in France is part of this approach.
- National GuidelinesServices and OperatorsThe services and operators of the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition promote resources serving EEDD and support actors in this awareness-raising effort at national and local levels - associations, local authorities, educational institutions, socio-economic actors...Facilitation and Participation• Integrating environmental education and sustainable development approaches into regional systems, plans and schemes relating to ecological transition to increase everyone's capacity to implement it; • Effectively and tailored implementation of EEDD education for society in all its dimensions: children, students, undergraduates, young people, employees, decision-makers, retirees, families, citizens...; • Establishing partnerships between local stakeholders to create synergies and cross-cutting linkages around territorial sustainable development challenges; • Pooling educational practices and social innovations for broader leverage and mobilization among citizens; • Implementing varied educational approaches (information, awareness-raising, eco-citizenship, education and local mobilization...) contributing to citizen and stakeholder engagement; • Rolling out a dynamic for appropriating sustainable development objectives.
- Strong Local DimensionTerritorial AnchoringEEDD is grounded in and derives meaning from understanding what is at stake at the local level.Local Experiments and Social InnovationLocal experiments, territorial projects and social innovation initiatives foster new forms of mobilization, participation, self-learning and peer-to-peer training - residents, employees, students, entrepreneurs, elected officials, consumers... They strengthen each person's adaptive capacity and agency for the necessary transformation of lifestyles.Role of Local AuthoritiesA local authority is a permanent network of production circuits, social ties, culture and interdependent environmental resources. Through the diversity of initiatives and actions of awareness-raising, information, education and participation offered to all audiences throughout life, EEDD implemented by territories constitutes an essential support point particularly for public policies of the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition.Themes and Agenda 2030EEDD integrates themes championed by the Ministry - water, mobility, food, energy, climate, waste, biodiversity, risks, modes of production and consumption - and proposes a systemic approach to sustainable development challenges. It contributes to Priority 3 of France's Agenda 2030 roadmap: 'Relying on education and lifelong learning to enable behavioral and lifestyle change adapted to the world to be built and sustainable development challenges'.
