The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) aims to strengthen cooperation between scientists and policymakers in the field of biodiversity and ecosystem services in order to conserve and sustainably use nature, ensure long-term human well-being, and achieve sustainable development.

  • What is IPBES?
Established in 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an intergovernmental scientific and political body that brings together 132 UN Member States. Its mission is to synthesize and assess knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystem services in order to inform policymakers and the public about the challenges posed by current changes in biodiversity.
To this end, it seeks to identify and develop decision-support tools and methods that take into account all knowledge on biodiversity, whether from scientific research, governments, non-governmental organizations (associations, companies, etc.), or local and indigenous stakeholders.

    • In May 2019, IPBES released its first report on the state of biodiversity and ecosystems at the global scale, highlighting a deeply alarming situation. It also calls for major transformations in society, similar to the IPCC on climate issues. • Read the press release • Consult the summary for policymakers (in English) • Consult the full report (in English)
