The National Biodiversity Observatory (ONB) is a partnership mechanism designed to inform a broad audience about the state of biodiversity in France, the pressures and uses affecting it, and the responses and measures taken to protect it.

  • What is the ONB?
The National Biodiversity Observatory (ONB) is a partnership mechanism designed to inform a broad audience about the state of biodiversity in France, the pressures and uses affecting it, and the responses and measures taken to protect it.
Established by the Ministry of the Environment in 2011 following the Grenelle for the Environment, it was placed under the governance of the French Agency for Biodiversity in 2017 and then the French Office for Biodiversity in 2020.
  • Indicators
The indicators developed by the national biodiversity observatory are organized into different sets, each designed to cover all aspects of a particular theme, based on a limited series of societal questions.
    • Four main indicator sets are currently available to comprehensively document the directions and objectives of the national biodiversity strategy: • a "Summary" set comprising indicators at the national level, relating to biodiversity as well as various aspects of society interacting with biodiversity: policies, behaviors, pressures, ecosystem services, etc.; • an "Overseas Specificities" set that supplements the previous one with a few indicators addressing characteristics of overseas territories; • a "Nature" set grouping indicators on the state and trends of the main components of biological diversity, as well as knowledge about them. Some indicators from this set are included in the two previous sets; • a "Knowledge" set, which focuses on knowledge of biodiversity, an essential element for assessing the quality of constructed indicators.
    • Thematic sets are progressively developed to deepen quantitative documentation on topics identified as most relevant. • > Access ONB indicators
