Portrait touristique de la mer et du littoral
Le littoral est un territoire réduit, à la rencontre entre la terre et la mer. Sur seulement 4 % du territoire, les communes littorales métropolitaines regroupent plus de 6 millions d’habitants et disposent de 7,5 millions de lits touristiques. Les conflits d’usage y sont nombreux et les richesses biologiques importantes, alors que le changement climatique y revêt des enjeux majeurs. Par ailleurs, l’ensemble des eaux marines sous juridiction française ont une surface de près de 11 millions de km², plaçant la France en deuxième position derrière les États-Unis. Afin de suivre les aspects environnementaux, sociaux et économiques sur ces territoires à enjeux, un Observatoire national de la mer et du littoral (ONML) a été créé. Il met à la disposition de tous des informations sur la mer et le littoral, pour la métropole et l’outre-mer.
The coast is a confined territory where land meets sea. Covering just 4% of the territory, mainland coastal municipalities are home to over 6 million inhabitants and provide 7.5 million tourist beds. Usage conflicts are numerous and biological resources are significant, while climate change poses major challenges. Furthermore, all maritime waters under French jurisdiction cover approximately 11 million km², placing France in second position behind the United States. To monitor environmental, social and economic aspects of these strategic territories, a National Observatory for the Sea and Coast (ONML) was created. It makes information on the sea and coast available to all, for both mainland France and overseas territories.
