The long-term objective of the European Union's waste management policies is to reduce the volume of waste produced and, when their production is unavoidable, to use them as a resource. This is why each Member State must, every two years since 2004, provide the European Commission with a set of data on waste production and treatment according to a common methodology (European statistical regulation on waste). In 2018, the European Union generated 2.6 billion tonnes of waste, equivalent to 5.2 tonnes per capita. Municipal waste production reached 251.9 million tonnes in Europe, of which 35.9 million tonnes for France in 2018.

  • Waste production in the European Union
In 2018, at the European level, production reached 2,610 million tonnes, representing an increase of 2.9% compared to 2016. This averages 5.1 tonnes per capita. France is at the European average, but excluding "main mineral waste" it falls below (1.5 tonne/capita versus 1.8 tonne/capita for the European average).
Significant disparities exist between countries, linked to their own characteristics (institutional, industrial, demographic, etc.), as well as the quality of their information systems.

  • Municipal waste production in the European Union
Municipal waste production in the European Union is tracked annually by EUROSTAT. These are defined as household waste and similar waste, excluding debris and rubble. Within the 28-member European Union, in 2018, they represent 251.9 million tonnes in Europe, of which 35.9 million tonnes for France, equivalent to 491 kg per capita.
This average, however, masks significant disparities (272 kg/capita in Romania, 535 kg/capita for France, 814 kg/capita in Denmark), each country having its own specific organization in waste management (inclusion or exclusion of waste produced by private and public institutions, etc.).
