  • Introduction to the Mysteries(0'003'04)
The Wither, the ancient Builders civilization, and the Warden represent three distinct unsolved mysteries in Minecraft that are all connected together.
The Warden was originally scheduled for summer 2021 but the deep dark was removed from that update and the release was split into two parts before finally launching as part of the Wild update.
    • Ancient cities - one of the coolest and most complex structures ever created in Minecraft • The Warden - the single strongest mob in the game • New blocks and items in the deep dark biome
All disparate parts are connected together and tied to a single key item that's been broken up and hidden throughout updates: a music disc.
  • The Skull Catalyst and Soul Mechanics(3'045'29)
The skull sensor reacts to noise and alerts the Warden to exact location. The skull Catalyst block uses energy to transform surrounding blocks into other skull blocks, allowing the creature to spread.
Mobs that die within eight blocks of the Catalyst don't drop XP orbs. Instead, souls appear above the Catalyst, which then spreads skull to new blocks.
The Warden has three trapped souls visible as faces in the middle of its chest. The Warden itself appears to be made of skull and souls, acting as the final line of defense for the skull species.
The skull shrier block creates souls from the dead and makes a shriek sound that signals the Warden to burrow up to the surface in response.
  • The Ancient Cities and Deep Dark Biome(5'297'00)
Ancient cities are covered in wool and carpets because these blocks don't activate skull sensors when walked on, indicating the inhabitants were aware of the Warden and tried to coexist with it.
    • Made of reinforced deep slate and movable indestructible blocks similar to end portal frames • Called the city center in game files • Smaller versions throughout the cities are called small portal statues
The portal structures suggest the idea of a new dimension as part of Minecraft's history, though Mojang hasn't announced an actual new dimension.
The concentration of skull blocks is highest in ancient cities, indicating this is where the skull originated rather than being created by the ancient Builders.
  • Disc 5 and Sound-Based Storytelling(7'0010'36)
Disc 5 is split into nine fragments found in chests throughout ancient cities. Like discs 11 and 13, it uses sound effects to tell a story rather than playing music.
    • Static and rumbling sounds with time warping effects • Footsteps on dripstone and flint and steel lighting fires • Marching footsteps of heavily armored soldiers • Warning sirens from the city • Lever and door opening sounds • Monster shrieks and creature roars
The disc depicts a character walking underground, hearing the Wither, rushing to the surface, alerting the city, opening doors to defend, and ultimately summoning something from a portal.
The disc fragments were recorded at different RPM speeds, explaining the constant warping and time-shifting effects throughout the track.
  • The Wither Invasion and Escape Attempt(10'3614'58)
An ancient Builder discovers the Wither floating outside while caving for materials. He rushes to the surface where the city's emergency sirens begin blaring in response.
The ancient city deploys heavily armored soldiers to travel through caves toward a secure entrance. The Wither follows them down into the depths with explosions getting closer and more frequent.
    • The ancient Builders had previously built portals to the Nether and learned about Soul Sand properties • The portal frame is made of reinforced deep slate that even the Wither cannot destroy • Soul Sand serves as the most powerful energy source for powering the portal • Redstone circuits are used to experiment with power output and redirection
In their final moments, the ancient Builders light the portal using Soul Sand, creating a gateway that screams as souls are consumed to power it.
  • The Warden's Arrival and Aftermath(14'5816'29)
From the portal emerges the Warden, which destroys the Wither but also brings the skull into the world. The Warden roar is closely followed by a slowed-down death sound from the Wither itself.
The ancient Builders begin to worship the Warden as a god because it saved them from the Wither. Candles are placed around the portal and the portal itself is shaped to resemble the Warden.
    • The awakened skull continues to kill many ancient Builders as they go about their lives • Survivors attempt to stay in cities by using carpets and wool to avoid making sounds • Opening chests still triggers the skull sensors, making habitation impossible • The few remaining ancient Builders are forced to leave the underground cities
The surviving ancient Builders construct strongholds with confusing hallways and staircases to outrun the Warden. They create end portals to escape the world, but become trapped on the other side.
  • Conclusion and Game Theory(16'2917'04)
The Warden is not a failed experiment created by the ancient Builders, but rather an invasive species from another world that came through their escape portal.
The skull is a new invasive species brought into Minecraft through the dimensional gateway, fundamentally changing the world and forcing the civilization to abandon their underground cities.
Disc 5 serves as a warning about opening portals to mysterious new lands. If the Warden is what emerged last time, the fear is what dangers might emerge if the portal is opened again.
This story explains the journey from the ancient Builders to the strongholds and the end dimension, completing a major narrative arc in Minecraft's hidden lore.
